Der Datenraum Kultur – Opportunities for Culture, Media and the Creative Industries

The Data Space Culture is one of the 18 lighthouse projects of the German government’s digital strategy. As the result of an intensive expert discourse, the digital infrastructure has been under construction for a few months now, with the aim of promoting the nationwide networking of cultural institutions and players from the media and creative industries. In compliance with European rules and values, an independent technical basis is being created, analogous to other data room projects at the national and international level, for the protected exchange of data of the most diverse kinds, such as digital copies, event information or usage data.
The data room enables a simplified and comprehensive exchange of data between actors from the cultural, media and creative sectors. As a result, a wide variety of innovative products and cultural offerings with a high reach as well as reuse in value-added services for the culture, media and creative industries can be created.
In the start-up phase, the feasibility, economic relevance and added value of the Culture Data Space will be worked out and proven on the basis of initially four applications. Machine-readable theater schedules, digital music lessons, virtual museum visits and networked cultural platforms – the range of digital possibilities in the Culture Data Space is vast. By 2025 at the latest, a basis for subsequent regular operation of the Data Space Culture should be available.
