The new Digital Omnibus draft has been published, marking one of the most substantial proposed updates to EU data protection legislation in recent years. It introduces amendments to the GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive, including changes that will influence cookie banners, tracking practices, and related compliance procedures. While the European Commission highlights simplification as a key objective, several privacy organisations have raised concerns about potential implications.

For organisations, the central issue is what these changes may mean in practice: whether compliance requirements will shift, which areas may become more flexible, and where new responsibilities could emerge. This includes possible effects on internal compliance structures, cookie and consent management, AI-related processes, and the handling of personal data more broadly.
